Icebergs

We have been really lucky these past few days. It has cleared up momentarily throughout the day. Most of these pictures are taken at sunrise.

I have to say though, the pictures just don't do the ice bergs justice. They are absolutely breath taking. And the mountain peaks are just incredible.

Mountain peak in the distance

Today was a great day. We saw tons of ice bergs and mountains, and a couple of whales and seals. I wasn't able to get any pics of the whales or seals. But, hopefully I will be able to at some point. The flat tabular ice bergs are actually pieces of the ice shelf that have broken off and floated out to sea

and the rounded ice burg was actually the bottom at one point and has been turned over.

The bottom of the ice burg gets eroded as water passes under it and when it becomes too top heavy it flips over.

One thing to keep in mind when looking at these burgs is that most of the burg is beneath the water. So to get a good idea of how big the burgs actually you have to double/quadruple it in size. Also, the blue ice is my favorite.

A blue iceberg

It's a beautiful color. It's blue because it is extra compacted (very hard). The more compacted the ice gets the darker in color it gets. The ice actually gets green! That stuff is really hard. Even our ice breaker has to make sure it steers clear of green ice. Hope you have enjoyed the pictures!

  • You have a breath-taking hiney!!! I mean that thing's good. I want to be friends with it. Be sure to keep feeding it whole milk across 10 daily bowls of sugar-based cereal; it hasn't hurt you yet!!!
